Reigning champion Martina Trevisan withdrew from WTA 250 Morocco Open in Rabat amid calf pain

Last year’s champion Martina Trevisan (Italy) was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the clay tennis tournament WTA 250 Morocco Open in Rabat with a prize pool of 259,000 USD. The top-seeded Martina Trevisan withdrew due to calf pain against Julia Grabher (Austria) after losing the first set by 3:6.

The problem for the world’s number 26 Italian tennis player did not appear to be serious, but she decided to withdraw from the match for safety reasons ahead of the upcoming French Open, which starts on Sunday.

For a place in the final, Julia Grabher will face the Argentinian Julia Riera (Argentina), who eliminated the sixth-seeded Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan) by 2-1 (5:7, 6:4, 6:2). The 20-year-old Julia Riera, ranked 195th in the world, made her debut on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour, reaching the semifinals in her first tournament of the WTA 250 series.

The 2nd-seeded Sloane Stephens (USA) also qualified for the semi-finals after defeating Peyton Stearns (USA) by 2-1 (6:7, 6:3, 7:6) in 2:49 hours of play. In the clash to reach the final of the tournament, she will face Lucia Bronzetti (Italy), who defeated Alycia Parks (USA) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:0).
