The 5th-0seeded and one of the favorites for winning the title, Ons Jabeur, is out of the US Open 2023 after losing in the Round of 16 to Qinwen Zheng (China) by 0-2 (2:6, 4:6) in 1:24 hours of play.
The Chinese tennis played, who is 23rd-seeded in the main draw, played a very strong match and took advantage of Ons Jabeur, who did not seem to be in optimal condition and made 33 unforced errors. On the other had Qinwen Zheng recorded 21 winners and 4 aces.
The Tunisian tennis player was not convincing in any of her previous matches, and today she continue with her weak performance. She won only 47% of her 1st serve points and 41% in the second serve, but also 3 double faults.
In the quarter-finals, Qinwen Zheng will face Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Daria Kasatkina (Russia) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:3).
This is the best performance of Zheng Qinwen at the Grand Slam tournament, as her previous top achievement was reaching the fourth round of the French Open / Roland Garros in 2022. She has won one WTA Challenger and eight ITF singles titles, and was named the 2022 WTA Newcomer of the Year. She won her maiden WTA Tour title at the 2023 Palermo Ladies Open.
