Iga Baumgart-Witan is a Polish sprinter, specializing in the 400m. She won several medals at major championships as part of Polish 4x400m relay teams, including a gold in the mixed relay and a silver in the women’s relay at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She is also the European champion and the World Championships Silver medalist.
Iga Baumgart-Witan was born on April 11, 1989, in Bydgoszcz, Poland. She started in athletics as a kid and showed great results in sprints and 400m.
Iga Baumgart-Witan made her competitive debut in 2006, winning the gold at the Lodz Polish U18 Championships and the bronze at the Torun Polish Cup in 400m. During the next season, she won the 400m gold at the Biala Podlaska Polish Junior Championships but also competed at the Hengelo European Junior Championships, where finished 5th on the 4x400m relay.
In 2008, Iga Baumgart-Witan made her debut at a senior national championship, finishing 4th in 400m at the Spala Polish Indoor Championships. However, she won the gold at the Spala Polish Junior Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, she won the 400m silver at the Torun Polish Junior Championships and finished 7th at the Szczecin Pedro’s Cup and 16th at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial, as well as competed at the Szczecin Polish Championships, but did not overcome the heats.
In 2009, Iga Baumgart-Witan continued gaining experience and improving her results. She finished 4th at the Spala Polish Indoor Championships and 5th at the Bydgoszcz Polish Championships in 400m but also finished 6th at the Kaunas European U23 Championships in the 4x400m relay. Meanwhile, during the season, she won the 400m gold at the El Prat de Llobregat Spanish Club Championships and Torun Polish National League Second League, as well as the silver at the Grudziadz Lekkoatletyczny Puchar Polski.
In 2010, Iga Baumgart-Witan won her first national title in 400m at the Spala Polish Indoor Championships but also triumphed with the gold at the Krakow Polish U23 Championships in 200m and the silver in 400m. During the season, she won the silver at the Międzyzdroje W. Komar & T. Slusarski Memorial in 400m and Torun Memoriał Grzegorza Duneckiego in 200m.
Iga Baumgart-Witan won the 400m silver at the Bydgoszcz Polish Championships in 2011 and also finished 4th in the 4x400m relay at the Ostrava European U23 Championships and European Team Championships. In 2012, she made her Olympics debut at the London 2012 Olympics, competing in the 4x400m relay, but did not qualify for the finals. However, in the 4x400m relay, she won the gold at the Bydgoszcz European Athletics Festival. Individually, Iga Baumgart-Witan won the bronze at the Spala Polish Indoor Championships and the silver at the Bielsko-Biała Polish Championships in 400m. Meanwhile, she earned the gold at the Sopot Janusz Sidło Memorial and Krakow Polish Club Championships.
In 2013, Iga Baumgart-Witan competed at the Moskow IAAF World Championships in the 4x400m relay but again did not overcome the heats. However, she won the 400m bronze at the Torun Polish Championships and Janusz Kusocinski Memorial, as well as the gold at the Bydgoszcz European Athletics Festival.
The next two seasons were not so successful for Iga Baumgart-Witan, as she did not overcome the 4x400m relay heats at the Zurich European Championships in 2014 and the Beijing IAAF World Championships in 2015. However, she succeeded in winning the silver at the 2015 Krakow Polish Championships.
In 2016, Iga Baumgart-Witan competed at her second Olympics Games, finishing 6th in the 4x400m relay at the Rio 2016 Olympics. However, the Polish team again failed to overcome the heats at the Amsterdam European Athletics Championships and missed the final. Individually, she finished 5th at the Bydgoszcz Polish Championships and 6th at the Golden Spike Ostrava 2016.
Iga Baumgart-Witan won her first international honor in 2017, as the Polish 4x400m relay won the bronze at the London IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Moreover, they won the gold at the Taipei Universiade, Beograd European Indoor Championships, and the Villeneuve d’Ascq European Team Championships, as well as the silver at the Nassau IAAF World Relays. Individually, Iga Baumgart-Witan earned the 400m gold at the Bialystok Polish Championships and Torun Copernicus Cup, the bronze at the Torun Polish Indoor Championships and Villeneuve d’Ascq European Team Championships.
In 2018, Iga Baumgart-Witan and the Polish team won another European title in the 4x400m relay at the Berlin European Athletics Championships, while in the same competition, she finished 5th at 400m, losing to her compatriot Justyna Swiety-Ersetic, who won the title. Meanwhile, during the season, Iga Baumgart-Witan won the 400m bronze at the Lublin Polish Championships and Janusz Kusocinski Memorial, as well as the gold at the Gent IFAM Meeting.
Polish women’s 4x400m relay and Iga Baumgart-Witan continue dominating the world athletics in 2019, winning the gold at the Glasgow European Indoor Championships and Bydgoszcz European Athletics Team Championships, as well as the silver at the Doha IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Individually, in 400m, she finished 8th in Doha and won gold at the Torun Polish Indoor Championships and Radom Polish Championships. Meanwhile, she won the bronze at the IWC Zagreb 2019, The Match Europe vs USA in Minsk, Meeting Pro Athle Tour de Sotteville les Rouen, and ORLEN Memorial Janusza Kusocinskiego, as well as the gold at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais and Torun ORLEN Copernicus Cup.
In 2020, Iga Baumgart-Witan had a short season due to the coronavirus pandemic, which seriously hampered athletics worldwide. However, she won the 400m gold at the Torun ORLEN Copernicus Cup, the silver at the Wloclawek Polish Championships, and the bronze at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial. However, during the season her biggest achievement was winning the gold at the Bruxelles AG Memorial Van Damme in 400m.
Iga Baumgart-Witan had her most remarkable season in 2021, winning the gold in the 4x400m mixed relay and a silver in the women’s 4x400m relay at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
In 2022, Iga Baumgart-Witan continued with her top performance and was an important part of the Polish relay team. She won the bronze at the Beograd World Athletics Indoor Championships and the silver at the Munich European Athletics Championships in the 4x400m relay. In 400m individual, she triumphed with the gold at the Szczecin 5. Memorial Wieslawa Maniaka, the silver at the Torun ORLEN Copernicus Cup.
Iga Baumgart-Witan missed the 2023 season, but returned perfectly in 2024, winning the 4x400m mixed relay gold and 4x400m relay silver at the Nassau World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24.
