Petra Kvitova stopped the 9th-seeded Garbine Muguruza in the third round of the US Open 2022

The two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova stopped the 9th-seeded Spanish tennis player Garbine Muguruza and qualified for the Round of 16 at the US Open 2022. Petra Kvitova won the match by 2-1 (5:7, 6:3, 7:6) for 2 hours and 41 minutes.

Garbine Muguruza made 32 unforced errors and 21 winners during the match and lost 2 match points in the third set. On the other hand, Petra Kvitova played aggressively and made 14 aces, 12 double faults, 50 unforced errors and 43 winners.

The first set started equally and both players exchanged a break and won their serve games. In the 10th game of the set, however, Garbine Muguruza broke the serve of Petra Kvitova and took and advantage, which she secured an won the set.

The second set was for the Czech player, who made one break, but it was quite enough to win it by 6:3.

The third set was dramatic and lasted 76 minutes. In the first games, both players won their serve games and the result was running equally. In the 6th game of the set, however, Garbine Muguruza broke the serve of Petra Kvitova and took a lead. At 5:3 she was serving for the set but gave one breakpoint to her opponent and this was enough for the Czech tennis player to return to the match. In the 12th game, as result 6:5 for the Spaniard, she received two match points, which Petra Kvitova succeed to save and put the set into a tiebreak. And the tie break was another drama, which was finally won by the Czech tennis player by 12-10 from the 4th matchpoint.

Thus, Petra Kvitova qualified for the fourth round of the US Open 2022, where will face the 8th-seeded American Jessica Pegula.

In another match, the Czech tennis player Karolina Pliskova defeated Belinda Bencic by 2-1 (5:7, 6:4, 6:3) and qualified for the Round of 16, where will face Victoria Azarenka.
