The two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) started her participation in the WTA 500 Sydney Classics with a difficult victory.
Petra Kvitova defeated Arantxa Rus (Netherlands) with 2-1 (3:6, 7:6, 7:5) in a match that lasted almost 3 hours.
The Czech lost the first set, but in the tiebreak of the second set took four consecutive points at 3:4 and after 7:4 tied the score.
In the third set Petra Kvitova saved two match balls in the tenth game, in the next she broke the service of her opponent, and in the 12th she closed the match with her first match ball.
Last week, Petra Kvitova was eliminated at the start of the tournament in WTA 500 Adelaide International.
“I really had to fight a lot. I lost my first match in Adelaide and after losing at the beginning of the season you don’t feel the best. That was my case. It’s been a long time since I turned a game like this, so it’s something special”, commented the Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova.
In the second round, Petra Kvitova will face Tunisian player Ons Jabeur, who won her match versus Astra Sharma by 2-0 (6:1, 6:3).
