Petra Kvitova misses the 2024 Australian Open due to pregnancy

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova announced that she will become a mother. The 33-year-old Czech woman used her profiles in the social networks to announce the news.

“On the first day of 2024 I wanted to wish you a happy new year and share the exciting news that Jiri and I will be welcoming a baby into our family this summer!”, wrote Petra Kvitova. Due to the impending birth, she will not play at the Australian Open from January 14 to 28 in Melbourne, and in all likelihood will not be able to return to the court until early 2025 at the earliest.

Petra Kvitova played the final of the Australian Open in 2019, in which she lost to the Japanese Naomi Osaka, who today made her return to the court after giving birth.

Petra Kvitova is known for her powerful left-handed groundstrokes and variety. She has won 31 career singles titles, including two major titles at Wimbledon in 2011 and in 2014. She also won a bronze medal in singles while representing the Czech Republic at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her career-high ranking of world No 2 was achieved on October 31, 2011.
