Tokyo 2020 Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir withdrew from the New York City Marathon at the last minute after announcing she had suffered an injury. She was injured during her last training session before the race.
“During the last training for the marathon I unfortunately injured my lower leg. Despite my initial hopes that he would improve, after two days of physical therapy we decided not to start the race”, said Peres Jepchirchir on her Facebook page.
Peres Jepchirchir is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who competes mainly in road running competitions. She won the gold medal in the women’s marathon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She was the champion at the 2016 and 2020 World Half Marathon Championships. She claimed victories at the 2021 New York City and 2022 Boston Marathon and finished third at the 2023 London Marathon.
