Penalty drama sent Australia to the semi-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup

Australia women football

Australia qualified for the semi-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Tony Gustavsson’s team prevailed over France after taking a total of 20 penalties, with the two teams making a goalless draw in the regular time and extra time, and finally Australia won by 7-6 on penalties.

For Australia, who have reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup four times, qualifying for the semi-finals is the first in history.

Australia goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold saved three penalties against France, but she missed her own penalty shot in the dramatic conclusion to the quarter-final clash in Brisbane. The decisive penalty was scored by Cortnee Vine.

The French women played a better first half and had a chance to win in extra time, but failed to convert. In the ninth penalty for France, Kenza Dali missed, and the execution was repeated after a review of the situation with VAR, and Mackenzie Arnold again did not allow a goal. Clare Hunt’s shot for Australia was then saved to make it 10 runs from the penalty spot for each of the teams.
