The Tokyo 2020 Olympics champion Panipak Wongpattanakit (Thailand) won the gold in the women’s 49Kg taekwondo event at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. The Thai athlete defeated Qing Guo (China) by final score 12-9.
The first round was slightly for Panipak Wongpattanakit, but her Chinese opponent won the second round and equalized the score. However, the strong final minutes for Panipak Wongpattanakit brought her the victory and the gold medal.
In the semi-finals, Panipak Wongpattanakit defeated Madinabonu Mannopova (Uzbekistan) by final score 8-7, while Qing Guo eliminated the two-time world champion Mobina Nematzadeh (Iran) by final score 25-8.
The result is not surprising, as Panipak Wongpattanakit is currently the top-ranked taekwondo athlete in the women’s 49kg. She is Tokyo 2020 Olympics gold medalist and Rio 2016 Olympics bronze medalist in the event, as well as gold medalist from 2019 Manchester World Championships and silver medalist from 2017 Muju and 2023 Baku World Championships.
