Defending champion Ons Jabeur withdrew from the WTA 1000 Madrid Open tennis tournament due to a calf injury. The Tunisian, who is WTA No 4, suffered an injury last week and withdrew from the semi-final in WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix In Stuttgart against Iga Swiatek.

“The medical examinations done show that I have a small tear in my calf and I will need more time to recover”, said the 28-year-old Ons Jabeur. “I regret to announce that I will not be able to compete and defend my title this year at the Madrid Open”, added she.

The tournament in Madrid starts today and will run until May 7.

Ons Jabeur is a Tunisian professional tennis player. She has a career-high Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of world No 2 and is the current No 1 Tunisian player, and the highest-ranked African and Arab tennis player in WTA and ATP rankings history. She has won four singles titles on the WTA Tour, as well as eleven singles titles and one doubles title on the ITF Circuit. Jabeur was the runner-up at both Wimbledon and US Open in 2022, becoming the first Muslim and Arab player (male or female) to reach a Grand Slam final.
