The top-seeded Ons Jabeur registered a surprising loss in the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 Jasmin Open Monastir. The Tunisian, who played in the finals of both Wimbledon and the US Open this year, lost by 1-2 (3:6, 6:4, 4:6) to American Claire Liu in a match that lasted almost two hours and a half.
Ons Jabeur, who is the world’s No 2, started the match poorly and fell behind 0:3 early, which opened the way for Claire Liu to win the first set.
Breaks abounded in the second set due to the serious number of errors on both sides of the net. The Tunisian was leading 3:1 and 5:3 in the game, but she allowed Claire Liu to break and serve to stay in the set. However, here came a new break for Ons Jabeur, with which she equalized the score in sets.
At the beginning of the third set, it looked like Ons Jabeur finally had control of the match, but surprisingly Claire Liu broke first again for 4:3. A further exchange of breaks followed in the next two games and in the end the American recorded one of her most prestigious victories.
In the semifinals, Claire Liu will play the winner of the match between Belgian Elise Mertens and Japanese Moyuka Uchijima.
The French tennis player Alize Cornet also reached the semi-finals after victory over Slovenian player Tamara Zidanaek by 2-0 (7:5, 7:6). In the next round, she will face the 2nd-seeded Veronika Kudermetova, who defeated Diane Parry (France) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:1).
