The seventh-seeded Tunisian Ons Jabeur defeated two-time Wimbledon champion Czech Petra Kvitova with 2-0 (6:4, 6:4) and qualified for the quarter-finals of WTA 500 Sydney Classics. The match lasted almost an hour and a half, in which the Tunisian won 76% of the 1st serve points and made 5 aces.
The match was marked with many breaks – a total of 8. Petra Kvitova was leading in the first half of both sets, but Ons Jabeur turned over them with late breaks.
“I finally won after so many losses. It’s not easy to return such powerful blows, but I was prepared and I really wanted this victory. I learned from the losses in previous games from Kvitova, especially from the last one in Cincinnati. Honestly, I’m glad the court was slow and that helped me”, said Ons Jabeur after the success.
In the next round, the Tunisian will face the fourth-seeded Estonian Anett Kontaveit, who eliminated the Romanian qualifier Elena Gabriela Ruse with 2-0 (6:3, 6:1).
The two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza qualified for the quarterfinals in Sydney, beating Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova with 2-0 (6:1, 7:6). Garbine Muguruza saved five set points in the second half to win the match. In the quarter-finals, she will face Daria Kasatkina, who defeated Elise Mertens with 2-0 (6:3, 6:4).
The French player Caroline Garcia continues to the quarter-finals without playing the match versus Elena Rybakina, who retired due to injury. In the quarter-finals, she will face the third-seeded Barbora Krejcikova from the Czech Republic, who defeated the Romanian Jaqueline Cristian with 2-0 (6:1, 7:5).
