Nina Derwael brought the first gold medal for Belgium at Tokyo Olympics

Two-time world and European champion Nina Derwael of Belgium won the women’s uneven bars in Tokyo Gymnastics Tournament. The 21-year-old Belgian played a great parallel and received a score of 15.200 points. So Nina Derwael brought the first gold to Belgium from the Tokyo Games.

She was the only competitor to crack a 15.

Anastasiia Iliankova of the Russian Olympic Committee, the European champion of the device since 2019, took the silver medal with 14.833 points. All-around champion Sunisa Lee (USA) won bronze with 14.500 points. Thus, she won the third medal in Tokyo, after becoming second in the team with the US team.

Nina Derwael is a two-time World champion (2018, 2019), a two-time European champion (2017, 2018) and 2020 Olympics champion on the uneven bars, the 2019 European Games champion on the balance beam as well as a two-time Belgian national all-around champion (2015, 2018). She is the first Belgian gymnast to medal at the World Championships, the first to become a World champion, and the first to become a European champion.
