New Zealand’s Meikayla Moore scored a hat-trick of own goals in one half

New Zealand national soccer player Meikayla Moore did something we will hardly see soon on world football fields when it comes to a high-level match. The footballer, who plays for the English Championship club Liverpool, scored three own goals in one half in the loss of New Zealand with 5:0 from the USA in the SheBelieves Cup tournament.

Meikayla Moore had the misfortune to deflect the ball in her own goal in the 5th minute after a cross from the left. The second own goal happened in the 6th minute, making the score 2:0 in favor of the opponent. This time she hit her own post with her head after a cross from the right. In the 36th minute Meikayla Moore, probably already quite hesitant, scored her third own goal of the match, and in the 40th minute was replaced. Her “achievement” is even more curious due to the fact that she scored one own goal with her left, right leg and head.

In the second half, the Americans scored two more goals, their authors were Ashley Hatch and Mallory Pugh.

“Everyone who plays football, no matter what level, has strong and weak matches. Today Meikayla Moore did not have a day. Of course, she is disappointed, but she is a great player and part of our team. We all support her in this difficult time for her”, said New Zealand coach Jitka Klimkova.

In their last match, the US team must beat Iceland to defend the trophy in the tournament. The Icelanders need a draw to triumph in the race for the first time.
