Naomi Osaka advanced to the second round of the WTA 1000 Miami Open

The former world’s number one Naomi Osaka (Japan) advanced to the second round of the WTA 1000 Miami Open after defeating Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italy) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4) in 79 minutes of play.

Naomi Osaka started the match strongly and achieved a break already in the second game and took a lead by 3:0. Although in the sixth game of the set she missed four breakpoints at the early break proved to be enough for her to close the set at 6:3.

The second set started equally with both players winning their serve games without problems. However, Naomi Osaka reached three breakpoints in the fifth game at 0-40 and scored already the first to take a lead by 3:2. She continue being confident on her own serve and did not give a chance for a break to her opponent. Thus, she closed the set at 6:4 from her second matchpoint.

The Japanese tennis player, who is the 2023 runner-up in the tournament, will face the 15th-seeded Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) in the next round.

In the other matches, Storm Hunter (Australia) qualified for the next round after retirement of her opponent Martina Trevisan (Italy) in the second set at 1-0 (6:3, 3:0).

Katie Volynets (USA) also advanced ahead after defeating her compatriot Sofia Kenin by 2-1 (6:2, 4:6, 6:3).
