Nafissatou Thiam won the women’s heptathlon title at the Roma European Athletics Championships

Nafissatou Thiam (Belgium) won the women’s heptathlon title at the Roma European Athletics Championships. The two-time Olympic champion finished the two-day competition with 6,848 points, setting a European championship record.

The Belgian athlete, who gave the best results in the high jump and javelin throw, as well as the second result in the long jump, improved by 25 points the old record of Britain’s Jessica Ennis-Hill, recorded at the European Championships in Barcelona in 2010. For the 29-year-old Nafissatou Thiam, this is the third title on the Old Continent.

“Actually, I was very nervous on the first day”, admitted Nafissatou Thiam. “I felt this was the first time after a very long time when I actually felt my belly. I did not know what was going on. I felt like I am 16 again. So I am glad I did my first start of the season here at the big championship”, added she.

The silver medalist with 6,635 points is Auriana Lazraq-Khlass (France), and the bronze goes to Noor Vidts (Belgium) with 6,596 points, both recording personal bests in the discipline.
