Mikaela Shiffrin won the world title in the giant slalom

In her sixth appearance at the women’s Alpine Skiing World Championships, Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) finally won the world title in the giant slalom. For her, this is the seventh gold medal in total from the World Championships, where she has four titles in a row (2013-2019) in slalom and one each in super-giant slalom (2019) and alpine combined (2021).

In the giant slalom, Mikaela Shiffrin had three podium finishes to date. She was third in 2019 Ore, and in 2017 Saint Moritz and 2021 Cortina d’Ampezzo she took silver. She also has gold in the event from the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics.

The American was fastest in the first run of the race in Courchevel and Meribel, then posted 12th time in the second to win by 0.12 sec over Italy’s Federica Brignone. Mikaela Shiffrin won despite an inaccuracy she made shortly before the finish of her second run. The representative of Norway, Ragnhild Mowinckel, finished third, 0.22 sec behind the champion.

The fans’ favorite in the finish area, Tessa Worley, who was second after the first run, made a mistake and fell just a dozen laps before the finish of the second. The Frenchwoman had previously been on pace to unseat interim leader Federica Brignone and move into position for her third giant slalom gold after titles at 2013 Schladming and 2017 Saint Moritz.

The program of the World Championships in Courchevel and Meribel continues tomorrow with the men’s giant slalom. The next start for the ladies will be on Saturday, when the classic slalom will also take place. This will also be the last competition for women at the World Cup in France.
