Mikaela Shiffrin secured the big crystal globe in the Alpine Skiing World Cup and Sofia Goggia is the new downhill queen

Mikaela Shiffrin secured the big crystal globe in the Alpine Skiing World Cup and Sofia Goggia is the new speed queen after the conclusion of today’s downhill in Kvitfjell, Norway.

However, the home crowd had completely different reasons to be euphoric, because Kajsa Vickhoff Lie became the first Norwegian in history to win in this discipline at the World Cup. The Alpine skier set the best time on the track – 1:32.36 min, leaving Sofia Goggia 0.29 sec behind.

The top 3 was completed by the Swiss skier Corinne Suter with a lag of 0.41 sec, and after the end of the competition, it became clear that Mikaela Shiffrin is already a five-time winner of the big crystal globe. She passes Lindsey Vonn as the No 1 American women’s all-time leader and is tied with Marc Girardelli, with only Annemarie Moser-Proll (six) and Marcel Hirscher (eight) having more.

Mikaela Shiffrin, who finished fifth today, also aims to improve Ingemar Stenmark’s record for most World Cup wins as she chases her 86th success in Sunday’s Super-G in Kvitfjell.

Kajsa Vickhoff spent 644 days away from skiing after a bad fall in Italy about two years ago, and she couldn’t have scripted her first downhill victory in a more fitting way – on the Kvitfjell track, which is hosting a women’s start for the first time in 20 years in the discipline in the World Cup.

Sofia Goggia won the Crystal Globe in downhill for the fourth time and third in a row, with only Lindsey Vonn having more than her in history with six.
