The Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif won her first WTA title after defeating the Greek Maria Sakkari in the final of the WTA 250 Parma Ladies Open by 2-0 (7:5, 6:3) in 1 hour and 37 minutes.
The match started well for Maria Sakkari, who was serving for the set at 5:4 but Mayar Sherif did not give up and not only returned a break but also took the three games in a row. Thus, she took a lead by 1-0.
In the second set, the Egyptian made her break for 5:3, after which she suffered her first career victory over a top 10 player.
The world’s No 74 Mayar Sherif became the first Egyptian to win a top-level women’s tournament.
The program underwent changes that plagued the contestants as the semi-finals were not played yesterday due to rainy weather and were rescheduled for today. Hours after them, the meeting for the title took place.
In the semifinals, Mayar Sherif prevailed over the Romanian Ana Bogdan with 2-1 (6:3, 4:6, 6:3), while Maria Sakkari defeated Danka Kovinic (Montenegro) with 2-0 (7:5, 6:2). For Maria Sakkari this is the third WTA final this season
