Maria Therese Tviberg won the women’s parallel giant slalom at the Alpine Skiing World Championships

Maria Therese Tviberg

Maria Therese Tviberg won the gold medal in the women’s parallel giant slalom at the Alpine Skiing World Championships in Courchevel and Meribel after prevailing over Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener in the final.

Just like in the team start yesterday, the gold was decided in one heat, after Maria Therese Tviberg and Wendy Holdener tied in the first. In the second, however, the Norwegian, who rides on the blue course, took the lead from the start and won by as much as 0.67 sec to bring Norway’s first gold since the championships in France. Yesterday, the Norwegians were left with silver in the team event, where they failed to defend their gold from Cortina d’Ampezzo 2021.

On her way to the final, Maria Therese Tviberg dealt with Clara Direz (France) in the round of 16, Germany’s Lena Duerr in the quarterfinals and Thea Louise Stjernesund (Norway) in the semifinals. In the small final, the Norwegian prevailed over Marie Lamure (France), who was the surprise of today’s competition. However, the Frenchman fell victim to an equipment problem in contention for bronze after her left ski came loose on a heavier edge and she was unable to fight off Thea Louise Stjernesund.

Cortina d’Ampezzo 2021 World Champion Marta Bassino (Italy) surprisingly dropped out of the competition as early as the round of 16, where she was eliminated by Marie Lamure, who then dealt with Franziska Gritsch (Austria) to reach the semi-finals, where she lost to Wendy Holdener. The Austrian Katharina Liensberger, who two years ago shared the gold with Marta Bassino, did not even qualify for the direct elimination phase, after taking 20th place in yesterday’s qualification.
