The 4th-seeded Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari will face the 3rd-seeded Cori Coco Gauff (USA) in the final of the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, the United States.
Maria Sakkari reached the final after defeating the top-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) by 2-1 (6:3, 4:6, 6:2) in 2:04 hours of play. The Greek player made two breaks in the first set and did not gave even a break point to her opponent. In the second set, she took a lead of 4:1, but after winning 5 games in a row, Jessica Pegula succeeded to close it at 6:4 and equalized. However, the former world’s No 3 Maria Sakkari made a strong second part of the third set and after two breaks won it by 6:2 and thus qualified for the finals.
The American talent Cori Coco Gauff also had a tough match versus the last year’s winner of the tournament Liudmila Samsonova (Russia) although winning by 2-0 (6:3, 6:3). One break in the first set and two breaks in the second were enough for Cori Coco Gauff to win the match, but her opponent did not retreated until the last point and the match had a total of 15 break points for both players.
Thus, Maria Sakkari, who did not win a WTA title since 2019, when she triumphed last at the WTA 250 Grand Prix Sar La Princesse Lalla Meryem, and Cori Coco Gauff will face on the final later today.
