The 4th-seeded Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari qualified for the third round of the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open in Mexico. She defeated Marta Kostyuk by 2-0 (6:4, 6:4) in a match that lasted almost two hours.
The first set started with two very long games, each ending with a break. Both players won their next serving games and then exchanged one more break. Thus, none of them took a lead. However, in the 9th game, Maria Sakkari broke the serve of her opponent and was serving for the set. She was forced to save two break points before finally closing the set by 6:4.
The second set, on the other hand, was running without breaks and again in the ninth game, the 4th-seeded Greek tennis player took a lead and broke the serve of her opponent. She again needed to save three break points before winning the match.
In the other matches of the day from the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open, Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (Canada) won versus the 16th-seeded Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:2, 6:0).
The 7ht-seeded Daria Kasatkina (Russia) also advanced to the third round after defeating Lin Zhu (China) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:2).
The 6th-seeded Caroline Garcia (France) had a hard match versus Rebecca Marino (Canada) but took the win by 2-1 (6:7, 6:3, 7:6).
