The 4th-seeded Maria Sakkari qualified for the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open. The Greek player defeated Veronika Kudermetova (Russia) by 2-1 (6:1, 5:7, 6:4) in 2:35 hours. Thus, Maria Sakkari will play face Marie Bouzkova for a place in the final.
Moreover, Maria Sakkari ensured a place in the Final tournament of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) in Fort Worth (USA), which starts on October 31.
Maria Sakkari saved 14 of 15 break points, including one in the final game, to advance to the season-ending tournament.
“Without fire, you can’t win these matches, without heart, without courage. You just have to do it and be brave”, said Maria Sakkari on the court after the match. The Greek woman added that she loves Mexico and will support the national football team at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
The other semifinal pair is between Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) and the third-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA).
Victoria Azarenka eliminated fifth-seeded Cori “Coco” Gauff (USA) by 2-1 (7:6, 4:6, 6:3), while Jessica Pegula defeated her compatriot Sloane Stephens by 2-0 (6:2, 6:2).
