Marathon champion Mary Keitany will be inducted into the Road Runners’ Hall of Fame

Three-time London Marathon champion Mary Keitany will be inducted into the Road Runners’ Hall of Fame in New York on November 4. Mary Keitany, who retired from athletics last year, has finished on the podium in the four New York City marathons she has run. She won the marathon in 2015 and 2018 and placed third and second in 2011 and 2018, respectively.

Mary Keitany said the New York course was the best, even though it was difficult. “This remains the best. This is where I recorded the most podium finishes of my career”, said she.

Mary Keitany, meanwhile, revealed how she was inspired by the likes of Kenya National Olympic Committee president Paul Tergat, five-time world cross country champion, and 1999 Berlin Marathon champion Tegla Loroupe, a former women’s marathon record holder.

“They were some of the big names back then and I hoped that one day I would run like them”, said Mary Keitany.

Mary Jepkosgei Keitany is a Kenyan former professional long-distance runner. She is the world record holder in a women-only marathon, having won the 2017 London Marathon in a time of 2:17:01. As of March 2022, she sits third all-time at the marathon and eleventh in the half marathon. Her former half marathon best of 1:05:50 (2011) lived three years as the women’s world record. She also has held the world record at 10 miles (50:05 minutes), 20 kilometres (1:02:36), and 25 kilometres (1:19:53), all of which were set in road races.
