Olympic and world long jump champion Malaika Mihambo is considering competing at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Istanbul in March.
The German athlete announced that she will start the indoor season on January 27 at a tournament in Karlsruhe and is also “considering participating in the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul”, which is scheduled for March 2-5 next year.
The three-time German Sportswoman of the Year said her main goal next year is the World Championships in the Hungarian capital Budapest from August 19 to 27, where she will aim for a third straight title. She also won Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021.
Malaika Mihambo has so far confirmed her start at the 60m in Karlsruhe, an event in which she has a personal best of 7.22 sec, but she could make a last-minute decision to enter her crowning event, as she did two years ago. Malaika Mihambo is a familiar face at this home event, having competed there in 2018, 2020 and 2022. Her first appearance in Karlsruhe marked something of a breakthrough for Malaika Mihambo as she cleared a then personal best of 6.72m to win the first her major women’s title later that year.
The 28-year-old athlete is already a two-time world champion, an Olympic champion and has a full set of European championship medals. She has personal bests of 7.30m outdoors and 7.07m indoors.
