Malaika Mihambo defended her world title in the long jump

Tokyo 2020 Olympic long jump champion Malaika Mihambo defended her world title in Eugene, Oregon. However, the 28-year-old representative of Germany came to success in a very tough competition. Malaika Mihambo started the final with two faults and was on the verge of ending the competition early, but on her third attempt, she rallied and returned to the competition with 6.98m (1.2m/s). An attempt of 7.09m (0.4 m/s) followed, and she saved her best for the final – 7.12m (1.0 m/s).

Tokyo 2022 Olympic bronze medalist and 2019 Doha World Athletics Championships bronze medalist Ese Brume (Nigeria) won silver with 7.02m (1.1m/s), while Brazil’s Leticia Oro Melo climbed to third on the podium with a personal best of 6.89m (1.1 m/sec).

The world indoor champion from Belgrade this winter Ivana Spanovic-Vuleta (Serbia) took seventh place with 6.84m (0.6m/sec).

The final was extremely even, and the density of the results proved it – only 7 centimeters separated the third and eighth places. In the eighth position was the silver medalist from Doha 2019 Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk (Ukraine) with 6.82 m (0.4 m/s).
