The names of the first three tennis players who found a place in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open are already known. These are Madison Keys, Barbora Krejcikova, and Jessica Pegula. The first two recorded quick victories in the “Round of 16”, while the third had a little bit harder match, but also won in two sets.
Madison Keys won by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1) against 8th-seeded Paula Badosa. The American needed only an hour and 11 minutes to break the resistance of her opponent. She took the initiative from the very beginning of the match with an early break and took the first set without much difficulty. In the second she was even more assertive, giving only a game to her opponent.
Her next opponent in the tournament will be fourth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova. The Czech also won more than convincingly her match with Victoria Azarenka. The 26-year-old tennis player won by 2-0 (6:2, 6:2). She did not meet any serious resistance from the former world’s number one and took a new step towards the final.
The most interesting match of the women’s program last night was the one between Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari. In it, the victory went to the American with 2-0 (7:6, 6:3), but she had to sweat a lot to rejoice in the end.
The first set was quite attractive. Jessica Pegula led twice with a break, but both times Maria Sakkari managed to come back and finally brought things to a tiebreak. There, however, the American was uncompromising and did not give a point to her rival.
In the second set, Jessica Pegula made a break in the fourth game for 3:1 and that was enough. She did not miss the initiative until the end of the set and with 6:3 managed to close the match in her favor. The next opponent of the American will be determined in the battle between Ashleigh Barty and Amanda Anisimova.
