Leylah Fernandez qualified for the second round of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open

The 2021 US Open runner-up and 13th-seeded Leylah Fernandez qualified for the second round of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open after a victory over Australian Storm Sanders with 2-1 (6:4, 6:7, 6:3). This was Leylah Fernandez’s first game since the injury she suffered at the end of May. The match lasted almost 3 hours under extremely heavy weather conditions.

The opponent of Leylah Fernandez in the second round will be Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil. She won her match versus the Italian Martina Trevisan with 2-1 (6:2, 2:6, 6:2).

The American Sloane Stephens also qualified for the second round after prevailing over her compatriot Sofia Kenin with 2-1 (6:2, 6:7, 7:5) in a three-hour match that was interrupted twice due to rain. In an all-Czech clash, the 14th-seeded Karolina Pliskova eliminated Barbora Krejcikova with 2-0 (6:3, 6:4).

The 16th-seeded Latvian tennis player Jelena Ostapenko defeated Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina with 2-0 (6:4, 6:2), while the French Alize Cornet eliminated Caroline Garcia with 2-1 (3:6, 6:3, 6:3).

At the start of the tournament, Madison Keys (USA) was defeated by the Asia Muhammad (USA), who started from the qualifiers, with 0-2 (6:7, 4:6). The 42-year-old Venus Williams from the USA also suffered a loss with 0-2 (2:6, 3:6) from the Swiss player Jil Teichmann.

Alison Riske (USA) qualified for the second round after defeating Czech Petra Kvitova with 2-1 (6:2, 4:6, 6:3), and Yulia Putintseva from Kazakhstan eliminated Canadian Katherine Sebov after 2-1 (3:6, 6:2, 7:5).
