Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez defended her title at the WTA 250 tennis tournament in Monterey, Mexico, which has a prize fund of 276,750 USD.
The second-seeded Leylah Fernandez defeated the fifth-seeded Colombian Camila Osorio Serrano in the final with 2-1 (6:7, 6:4, 7:6) in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
For Leylah Fernandez, it was the first final since US Open 2021, where she reached the final but lost to the British qualifier Emma Ruducanu.
The Canadian overcame a 1:4 deficit in the decisive third set. In the tenth game, she saved one match point and in the tiebreak, she managed to take the lead with 5-2 and close the match with 7-3.
“Today was a very, very difficult match, not only physically but also mentally. Camila Osorio Serrano is a difficult opponent. She makes sharp, high balls, which is very unpredictable”, said Leylah Fernandez. “I am very happy that I managed to find a way, despite my mistakes, to return to the match and then win it at the end. I am happy that I went through these difficult moments”, added she.
For 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez, this is the second career title from WTA, both from Monterey.
