American Alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin fell short of equalizing the overall record of 86 World Cup victories after finishing second in the slalom at the Czech resort of Spindleruv Mlyn.
Germany’s Lena Duerr won with a combined time of 1:30.91 min in both runs after finishing second in the first slalom of the weekend in the Czech resort yesterday. The 31-year-old Lena Duerr set the second time in both runs, but it was enough for the eventual win, the second in her World Cup career.
Mikaela Shiffrin was leading after the first run, but in the second, she was only 14th to finish second, 0.06 sec behind the German. Croatia’s Zrinka Ljutic remained third, 0.49 sec behind the winner.
27-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin entered today’s race on the back of a three-race winning streak this week and was hoping for an 86th win, equaling the record held by the great Swedish Alpinist Ingemar Stenmark.
Mikaela Shiffrin equaled Lindsey Vonn’s women’s record of 82 wins with a giant slalom triumph at the Italian resort of Kronplatz on Tuesday, before triumphing on the same track a day later. She then claimed her 85th World Cup victory in Saturday’s slalom in the Czech Republic.
The overall World Cup leader will have to wait to become the World Cup record holder as the World Cup in the French resort of Courchevel begins on February 6 before the World Cup resumes on February 25 with a downhill in Crans Montana, Switzerland.
In the women’s World Cup general classification, Mikaela Shiffrin leads convincingly with 1,697 points, a solid 731 point lead over second-placed Petra Vlhova, who has 966 points. Speed specialist Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland did not participate in the slalom and dropped to third place in ranking with 906 points.
In the standings for the Small Crystal Globe in slalom, Mikaela Shiffrin is again in the lead with 785 points, ahead of Wendy Holdener and Petra Vlhova with 530 points each.
