World number one Iga Swiatek’s decision to skip the Billie Jean King Cup finals in Glasgow is understandable, according to American legend Billie Jean King, although she wishes the Pole hadn’t taken it so hastily. Iga Swiatek blamed a busy schedule for her decision as the WTA Finals in Fort Worth (USA) wrap up just a day before matches in the team competition begin across the Atlantic on November 8.
“Personally, I think Iga could have waited a little longer before making the decision, because you never know how you’re going to do. I guess you have to figure out for yourself what’s important to you, but it doesn’t make sense to me”, the American said in video call.
The revamped team competition, previously named Fed Cup, features 12 teams that will play in four groups before the final stage. Defending champions Russia are penalized.
Iga Swiatek called on tennis governing bodies to work on a better competition schedule, adding that the packed schedule and time zone difference made it impossible for her to play for Poland in the Billie Jean King Cup finals.
But Billie Jean King herself suggested that players now have it easier than when she was in her prime.
“These days we were tired all the time. I think it’s a great privilege to represent your country, but I also understand her point of view. She’s No 1 in the world, she’s probably played the most matches. She must be tired by now. I was hoping. I think she’s just going to wait and see how things go. But I can totally understand her motivations”, said Billie Jean King.
Poland is in a group with the Czech Republic and the USA at the tournament.
