The case involving the participation of Elizaveta Polstyanaya at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship in Sofia will be resolved by the Latvian Gymnastics Federation, the local Olympic Committee reported.
The Olympic Committee set her a condition: she either renounces Russian citizenship and continues to play for Latvia, or does not refuse, but is then expelled from the national team. Elizaveta Polstyanaya announced on Saturday that she had been withdrawn from Latvia’s national team because she did not want to renounce her Russian citizenship.
“The Latvian Olympic Committee has not issued any ultimatums to Elizaveta Polstyanaya regarding her second citizenship”, the organization said a day later in response to the gymnast’s claims.
The World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship will be held in Bulgaria on September 14-18.
The national teams of Russia and Belarus are not allowed to participate because of sanctions imposed on them by the International Gymnastics Federation following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
