Lara Gut-Behrami (Switzerland) claimed her third victory since the start of the Alpine Skiing World Cup season after triumphing in the giant slalom in Kronplatz (Italy). For the Swiss, this is the second success in the last three days, as it is Sunday she won the super giant slalom in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Lara Gut-Behrami cruised to victory with great riding in both runs, posting first and third times respectively in the two downhills. With a total time of 2:00.64, the Swiss beat Alice Robinson (New Zealand) and Sara Hector (Sweden) by 1.09 sec, who shared the second position.
At the foot of the podium remained Norwegian alpine skier Ragnhild Mowinckel, who finished 0.14 sec behind Alice Robinson and Sara Hector. Somewhat surprisingly, sprint specialist Sofia Goggia (Italy) was the best of the home team’s representatives today, finishing in fifth place.
Sofia Goggia was eighth after the first run, but with a very aggressive ride in the second, she managed to overtake her teammates Federica Brignone and Marta Bassino. Federica Brignone finished the race in sixth position, followed by Zrinka Ljutic (Croatia), Camille Rast (Switzerland) and Julia Scheib (Austria), who won the second run.
With her win today, Lara Gut-Behrami moved to within just 95 points of Mikaela Shiffrin in the overall World Cup standings. The American did not start in Kronplatz after her heavy fall in the first downhill in Cortina on Friday and it is unclear when she will return to the starting grid. Third in the overall ranking is Federica Brignone, who is 331 points behind the leader.
In the battle for the small crystal globe in the giant slalom, Lara Gut-Behrami leads with 585 points, followed by Federica Brignone with 500 and Sara Hector with 452. Mikaela Shiffrin is third in the standings in the discipline with 429 points.
The Women’s World Cup was supposed to continue this weekend with the starts in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany), but due to the warm weather they were cancelled. Thus, the female competitors will now have a dozen days off before the next competitions, which will be in Soudeur (Andorra) at the end of next week. The Andorran resort will host starts in the giant slalom and slalom disciplines.
