Kimberly Garcia Leon of Peru won a second gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene (USA). The athlete added the 35km sport walking title to the one on 20km, which she won last Friday.
Kimberly Garcia Leon clocked 2:39.16, a new championship record. Katarzyna Zdzieblo from Poland finished second with a personal best of 2:40:03, while Chinese Qieyang Shijie took the bronze with 2:40:37.
The podium was the same as at the distance of 20 km. Kimberly Garcia Leon’s gold medal is the second World Cup honor for Peru in history.
“I have always dreamed of making history in the sport I am, so dedicated to and have been training since I was five years old. After my 20km win, I tried to stay well hydrated and eat well to prepare for the 35km. I trained to finish strong in the last five kilometers”, said Kimberly Garcia Leon.
Gabriela Kimberly Garcia Leon competed in the Women’s 20 km walk event at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China, and at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. among her biggest achievements so far is the silver at the 2019 Lima Pan American Games.
