The European Indoor Champion Keely Hodgkinson finally won a large outdoor title at the 800m after the silver of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the 2022 World Athletics Championships, and the Commonwealth Games in recent weeks.
Keely Hodgkinson triumphed with 1:59.04 min at the European Athletics Championships in Munich (Germany) ahead of Renelle Lamote of France with 1.59.49 and Polish Anna Wielgosz with 1:59.87 minutes.
The 20-year-old British athlete stridden clear with 250m to go before quickly putting the race to bed.
“I refused to walk away today without gold”, said Keely Hodgkinson, breaking out into the widest of smiles. “I wanted to do something a little bit different. I think it might have been a bit obvious if I’d gone to the front like I have been doing all year. The last 120m I went for it and hopefully it was enough”, added she.
This is Britain’s second gold in the discipline, 53 years after the success of Lillian Board in Athens in 1969.
