Katie Nageotte and Katarina Johnson-Thompson were nominated for the International Fair Play Committee Award

The Olympic pole vault champion Katie Nageotte and the Commonwealth Games heptathlon winner Katarina Johnson-Thompson have been nominated for the International Fair Play Committee Award.

The American Katie Nageotte came to the aid of her opponent Holly Bradshaw after the British athlete injured herself at this year’s World Championships in Eugene (USA), later defending her rival on social media over her withdrawal from the competition.

Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson was selected for her support of Sophie Weissenberg after the German fouled three times in the long jump in Eugene. Former world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson also had a similar experience in 2015.

The other nominees are Ukrainian high jumpers Yaroslava Makhuchych and Andriy Protsenko, who won medals in Eugene despite the volatile situation in their homeland following Russia’s military invasion that began in late February.

The contenders were determined by fans on social networks, as well as by a jury of former athletes.

“Each one of these athletes sets an example for the next generation. I would like to personally commend them for the incredible sportsmanship they displayed at the World Championships,” said IAAF President Sebastian Coe.

The winner will be announced in December.
