The British tennis player Katie Boulter won the title of the WTA 500 San Diego Open tennis tournament on hard courts with a prize money of 922,573 USD.
Katie Boulter, 27, defeated the 6th-seeded Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) in the final after a comeback of 2-1 (5:7, 6:2, 6:2) in two hours and 16 minutes of play.
The British tennis player won her first WTA 500 Series title and the second WTA title of her career after winning the WTA 250 Rothesay Open Nottingham last year. In the stands in San Diego was her partner Alex de Minaur, who arrived as quickly as possible after winning the trophy in Acapulco (Mexico).
After an even start, Marta Kostyuk led 5:2 in the first set, but Katie Boulter equalized to 5:5. At the end, the Ukrainian tennis player prevailed 7:5 in the first set and started the second game on her own serve. However, with a total of three breaks, Katie Boulter reached 6:2 and equalized the sets to 1-1, taking advantage of her good first serve. In the third set, the British tennis player led by 3:1, and then strengthened her lead with another break for 5:2 and closed the match at 6:2.
“I want to give special thanks to my friend. I appreciate his efforts to get here quickly. The week was really, really special for many different reasons. It’s great. I worked really, really hard for this success and I played some excellent tennis at times”, said Katie Boulter. “We fought a big battle today. I was a little nervous, but I managed to fight through and I’m proud of that”, added she.
