The Dutch speed skater Joy Beune triumphed with the women’s 5000m gold at the Calgary World Speed Skating Single Distances Championships 2024. The Dutch skater won the final competition with a personal best result of 6:47.72 min.
Joy Beune was the leader from the very beginning of the race and was not allowed to be overtaken until the final. Her compatriot Irene Schouten won the silver 1.26 sec behind the winner, while Martina Sablikova (Czech Republic) was third far behind the leaders with a time of 6:51.88 min.
Joy Beune made a fantastic skating at the final. She is a former silver medalist from the Inzell World Speed Skating Single Distances Championships 2019 in team pursuit and a bronze medalist at the Heerenveen European Championships Allround in 1500m.
Meanwhile, in the women’s 1500m final at the Calgary World Speed Skating Single Distances Championships 2024, Miho Takagi (Japan) earned the gold with a time of 1:52.29 min, while Mei Han (China) remained second with a personal best of 1:52.72 min. Joy Beune earned the bronze with 1:52.91 min.
