Jessica Pegula (USA) shocked the top-seeded and world’s number one Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) in the second match from the WTA Finals in Cancun Mexico. The American tennis player achieved a straight set victory in the match that lasted almost an hour and a half to close to by 2-0 (6:4, 6:3) and secure her place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Jessica Pegula 5 aces and 2 double faults, while her opponent made only one ace and 5 double faults. Although the Belarusian tennis player made 17 winners, against 14 for the American player, she recorded also 29 unforced errors against only 12 for her opponent.
Aryna Sabalenka started the match hesitantly and already in her first serve game she needed to save two breakpoint. Although she won it, Jessica Pegula was quite more stable in her serve and more accurate in her shots. She broke her opponent for the first time in the 5th game of the set and again in the 7th game, leading by 5:2. Jessica Pegula served for the set, but Aryna Sabalenka succeeded to return one of the breaks to reduce to 5:3 and then to 5:4. However, the American player won her serve in the 10th game on 15 and closed the set at 6:4.
Jessica Pegula started strongly the send set and with two early breaks and leading by 4:0, practically did not give any chance to the world’s number one. Thus, the American player won by 2-0 (6:4, 6:3) and secured her place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
In the last match from the group, Aryna Sabalenka will face Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) for the place in the semi-finals.
