The first Grand Slam tournament for 2023 – the Australian Open – started tonight. Some of the favorites in the tournament started their participation in Melbourne. Most of them started with convincing straight-set victories.
The 3rd-seeded Jessica Pegula defeated Jaqueline Cristian (Romania) by 2-0 (6:0, 6:1) in less than an hour.
The 6th-seeded Maria Sakkari also took a straight-set win. The Greek player prevailed by 2-0 (6:1, 6:4) over the Chinese Yue Yuan.
The start of the 7th-seeded Cori Dionne “Coco” Gauff was also convincing. The American defeated Katerina Siniakova by 2-0 (6:1, 6:4).
Emma Raducanu and Petra Kvitova also advanced in the tournament. The Briton won by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2) her opening match versus Tamara Korpatsch (Germany), while the Czech had to put in more effort, but still handled Alison Van Uytvanck by 2-0 (7:6, 6:2).
The 13th-seeded Danielle Collins (USA) defeated Anna Kalinskaya (Russia) with 2-1 (7:5, 5:7, 6:4).
The US Open 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu defeated 25th-seeded Marie Bouzkova by 2-0 (6:2, 6:4).
