The top-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) defeated Irina-Camelia Begu (Romania) by 2-1 (7:5, 4:6, 6:4) and advanced to the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open. The match lasted two hours and a half and the Romanian tennis player made as many as 8 double faults.
The first set started perfectly for the top-seeded American player, who took a lead of 2:0, breaking the serve of her opponent already in the first game. Thus, Jessica Pegula was leading confidently and even did not gave a breakpoint to her opponent. However, in the 8th game of the set, Irina-Camelia Begu succeeded to reach and breakpoint and won it, equalizing the score. In the next game, Jessica Pegula had three breakpoints to return her leadership again but missed them all. However, she succeeded to break again her opponent in the 11th game and thus won the set at her next serve game by 7:5.
In the second set, the American tennis player started strongly and lead by 4:0 with two breaks. The fans were expecting an easy win for Jessica Pegula, but her opponent made a great turnover and returned to the match. Irina-Camelia Begu won 6 consecutive games in the set and won it by 6:4.
The Romanian player also had a fly start in the third set and broke her opponent twice to lead by 4:0. However, similarly as the previous set, the big turnover was yet to come. Jessica Pegula won 6 games in a row and closed the set at 6:4 and won the match, qualifying for the quarter-finals of the tournament.
In the quarte-finals of the tournament, Jessica Pegula will face Paula Badosa (Spain), who had a quite easier win over Diana Shnaider (Russia) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:3) in just 1:17 hours.
Madison Keys (USA) also advanced to the quarter-finals after a victory over Magda Linette (Poland) by 2-1 (6:2 3:6, 6:1) and will face Daria Kasatkina (Russia), who eliminated Bernarda Pera (USA) after 2-0 (6:3, 7:6).
The Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic defeated Shelby Rogers (USA) by 2-1 (4:6, 7:5, 6:2) and in the next round will play versus Ekaterina Alexandrova (Russia), who eliminated Julia Grabher (Austria) after 2-0 (6:4, 6:2).
The 2nd-seeded Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) and Anna Kalinskaya (Russia) are the last two quarter-finalists after straight-set victories, respectively, over Caroline Dolehide (USA) and Victoria Azarenka (Belarus).
