Jessica Pegula achieved a fantastic turnover to defeat Elena Rybakina at the start of the WTA Finals in Cancun

The American tennis player Jessica Pegula won 10 of the last 12 games and prevailed over Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) by 2-1 (7:5, 6:2) to get off to a flying start in Group A at the WTA Finals in Cancun (Mexico).

The strong serves of Elena Rybakina gave her a led of 5:3 in the first set and was on course to win it as she served in the ninth game. But Jessica Pegula made a total turn of events on the court with a decisive break for 5:4. The American then used the momentum to close out the set and win a total of four games in a row, ending with a great forehand against the helpless Kazakhstani player, who made 35 unforced errors in the match.

“I feel like she made literally in front of me some unexpected and ridiculous mistakes. And I was able to take advantage of that with a quick reaction and then carry on with the same momentum in the second set”, said the happy Jessica Pegula after the match.

The fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula will face the lucky looser Maria Sakkari (Greece) on Tuesday in her second match in the group.
