Jelena Ostapenko eliminated Jessica Pegula to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open

The 13th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) qualified for the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing after eliminating the 4th-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:2) in 1:19 hours of play.

The first set started equally with Jessica Pegula making the first break in the third game, but Jelena Ostapenko equalized immediately. Both players exchanged another break in the next two games and the result went to 3:3. None of them succeeded to take an advance in the set, as Jessica Pegula saved another breakpoint to her opponent in the 8th game. However, finally, in the 10th game of the set Jelena Ostapenko received another breakpoint and this time she did not miss it, losing the set at 6:4.

The Latvian tennis player started strongly the second set, making an early break and took a lead of 3:0. She continue being quite convincing at her serve and did not give a breakpoint to Jessica Pegula, even succeeded to make another break in the 8th game to win the set by 6:2.

Thus, Jelena Ostapenko advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament, where will face Liudmila Samsonova (Russia), who eliminated Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) after 2-1 (6:4, 6:7, 7:5) in almost three hours of play.
