British track and field athlete Jazmin Sawyers produced one of the surprises in the long jump final at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul. She hit her mark on the fifth attempt when she landed at 7.00m and earned the top spot with a world best of the season.
Larissa Iapichino (Italy) won the silver with a new national record of 6.97m, which she achieved in her final sixth attempt. In the fifth, the young jumper registered 6.91m.
Three-time European indoor champion Ivana Spanovic-Vuleta (Serbia) will leave Istanbul with bronze this time after jumping 6.91m in her fifth attempt.
The Olympic champion from Tokyo 2020 Malaika Mihambo (Germany) remained without a medal – fourth with 6.83m.
Jazmin Sawyers is a British track and field athlete and sports presenter who competes in the long jump. She has also competed as a bobsledder and a heptathlete. Representing England, she was the silver medallist in the long jump at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She won a silver medal at the 2016 European Athletics Championships and a bronze medal in the 2022 event. At both the Rio 2016 Olympics and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she finished eighth in the long jump.
