Shiann Salmon is a Jamaican track and field athlete who specializes in the 400m hurdles and 400m. She is a two-time Commonwealth Games silver medalist, world U20 Championships silver medalist, as well as three-time NACAC U23 champion. Her personal bests are 53.82 sec in 400m hurdles and 51.74 sec in 400m.
Shiann Salmon was born on March 31, 1999, in Jamaica. She started in athletics at a young age and quickly proved her talent to become one of the most promising young athletes in the country. She started in long and high jumps, before turning into sprints and hurdles. Shiann Salmon started competing in 2013 in various disciplines, including the high jump, where she won her first official gold at the Kingston JAAA Carifta Trials.
Shiann Salmon competed locally at her younger age, gaining experience in athletics championships. She competed at the 2014 Kingston ISSA Athletics U15 Championships in several disciplines, winning gold in the high jump and bronze in the long jump.
In 2015, the Jamaican athlete proved to be one of the top young high jumpers in the country, winning the gold at Kingston U18 G.C. Foster Classics, Clarendon U18 Ben Francis Invitational, Kingston U17 ISSA Championships, and Basseterre U18 Carifta Games. Shiann Salmon also started competing in 400m hurdles for the first time, winning the prestigious silver at the Kingston ISSA Championships and competing at the Cali IAAF World Youth Championships but remained with honor.
Shiann Salmon made a strong 2016 season, winning her most significant honors so far. She won the silver at the Kissimmee AAU U19 National Club Championships in 400m hurdles and gold in the high jump, as well as silver at the Philadelphia Penn Relays in the high jump. She proved to be one of the most promising young athletes in the country.
In 2017, Shiann Salmon won the silver at the Willemstad U20 CARIFTA Games, Kingston U20 Douglas Forrest Invitational, and Kingston U20 Carifta Trials in 400m hurdles, as well as gold at the Kingston McKenley-Wint Classic U20, Kingston Carifta U20 Trials, Kingston U19 ISSA Championships, and Willemstad U20 CARIFTA Games in the high jump.
In 2018, Shiann Salmon made a fantastic season, turning entirely to running. She competed at the Tampere IAAF World U20 Championships, winning silver in 400m hurdles and bronze in 4x400m relay. Meanwhile, during the season, she won the gold at the Kingston U20 JAAA All Comers Meet, Nassau U20 CARIFTA Games, Kingston U20 ISSA Championships, and Kingston U20 GC Foster Classis in the 400m hurdles.
Shiann Salmon competed at the 2019 Doha IAAF World Championships in Athletics in 400m hurdles but remained out of the finals. During the season she won the silver at the NACAC U23 Championships and Jamaican Championships.
After a very short season in 2020, when her biggest achievement was winning the gold at the Texas A&M Invitational in 400m, the 2021 season was quite more successful. In 400m hurdles, she won the gold at the NACAC U23 Championships, as well as silver at the USATF Sprint Summit and bronze at the Drake Relays. In 400m, she won the silver at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Shiann Salmon won the silver at the 2022 Birmingham XXII Commonwealth Games in 400m hurdles. In the same discipline, she won the gold at the USATF Bermuda Games, the silver at the Jamaican Championships, and the bronze at the New York Grand Prix. She also competed at the Eugene World Athletics Championships but remained out of the finals.
In 2023, Shiann Salmon debuted in the Diamond League in Rabat, winning the bronze in the 400m hurdles. She also won the bronze at the USATF Bermuda Grand Prix.
