Jamaica knocked Brazil out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after a goalless draw

Jamaica knocked Brazil out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after a goalless draw in Melbourne. The Selecao, who had their backs against the wall and needed to win today’s match at all costs to advance to the Round of 16, started very strongly, but strikes from the legend Marta, Adriana and Tamires in the first twenty minutes were denied by the impressive Jamaican goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.

The South Americans missed a few more good opportunities before the break. In the second half, the Jamaica players again showed their determination to perform at a level and never allowed any surprises. The Brazilian footballers got to a series of corners, but they never managed to get any more serious opportunities.

It was Jamaica’s third successive World Cup group stage match in Australia and New Zealand in which they kept a clean sheet, while today’s match became the first goalless draw in the group stage since the first edition of the Women’s World Cup in 1991 in China, when they finished second in the group and reached the Round of 16 of the tournament.
