ITF named Aryna Sabalenka the women’s 2023 world champion

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has named Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) as the women “world champion” for 2023 following their performances at this year’s Grand Slam tournaments.

Aryna Sabalenka celebrated her first Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open, reached the final at the US Open and reached the semifinals at Wimbledon and Roland Garros.

The Belarusian tennis player, who was overtaken for the top spot in the women’s rankings by Iga Swiatek (Poland) after the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Finals, said 2023 had been “amazing” and she was delighted to be named world champion.

“I can’t wait to get back on the court for the new season in January”, commented Aryna Sabalenka.

The Wimbledon finalists Storm Hunter (Australia) and Elise Mertens (Belgium) earned the honor in the women’s doubles.
