Italy defeated France in the first match of the Group D of the WTA Billie Jean King Cup by 2-1. Martina Trevisan and Jasmine Paolini won their singles matches and gave a confident advance for the Italian team and although loisng the doubles match, they clinched the victory.
Martina Trevisan overturned Alize Cornet and won the match by 2-1 (2:6, 6:2, 6:2) in 2:16 hours, while Jasmine Paolini won the 2.5-hour battle versus Caroline Garcia by 2-1 (7:6, 5:7, 6:4). In doubles, Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic succeeded to defeat Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Martina Trevisan by 2-1 (5:7, 6:2, 10-6) to form the final score in the match.
In another match from the Billie Jean King Cup, in the Group C, Canada smashed Spain by 3-0. Marina Stakusic defeated Rebeka Masarova by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1) to give a lead for the Canadian team, while Leylah Fernandez defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo by 2-0 (7:6, 7:6) and brought the victory for the Canadians. In the doubles match, Eugenie Bouchard and Gabriela Dabrowski won their match versus Rebeka Masarova and Sara Sorribes Tormo by 2-0 (6;3, 7:5) to form the final result of 3-0.
The Billie Jean King Cup is the premier international team competition in women’s tennis, launched as the Federation Cup in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation.
