Iga Swiatek won the WTA 1000 Rome Open title

The leader in the world rankings, Iga Swiatek (Poland) won the title of the clay tennis tournament WTA 1000 Rome Open with a prize money of 5.5 million USD.

In contention for the trophy, she defeated the world’s number two and second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3) to become the champion of the competition for the third time.

The Polish tennis player once again won the battle between the top two in the women’s rankings following her triumph in WTA 1000 Madrid Open earlier this month.

The title is the career 21st for Iga Swiatek, who is in very good form ahead of this month’s French Open, where she is a three-time champion.

The Polish tennis player made two breaks in the first set, in which Aryna Sabalenka made 12 unforced errors. The Belarusian player recovered and made it five break points in an attempt to take a 2:0 lead in the second set, but her opponent held her serve.

Aryna Sabalenka failed to break again and Iga Swiatek saved two break points in her next service game. After 3:3, the Polish made a break again, which secured her the victory.
