The second-seeded Iga Swiatek (Poland) won the title of the hard court tennis tournament WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing with a prize pool of 8.1 million USD.
The Polish tennis player, who made her debut in the competition, easily defeated Liudmila Samsonova (Russia) in the final by 2-0 (6:2, 6:2) in 69 minutes.
Iga Swiatek made four breaks in the match and captured her fifth trophy of the year and 16th overall of her career. She is the first tennis player since Serena Williams to win five or more titles in two consecutive seasons, after the American did it in 2014 and 2015.
In 2023, Iga Swiatek triumphed at Roland Garros, Doha, Stuttgart and Warsaw. She dropped just one set at the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing on her way to the trophy. It is also her sixth WTA 1000 title, making her the only player to win six or more Masters’ titles before the age of 23, improving Caroline Wozniacki‘s record of five.
Playing in her seventh final of the season, Iga Swiatek achieved her third consecutive success against Liudmila Samsonova in the three matches between the two so far. By reaching the final, the Russian secured her return to the Top 20 of the world rankings.
